What to expect at your first remedial massage

The intake conversation, undressing, draping and pressure at Plumb Line, explained plainly so nothing on the day is a surprise.

5 minute read Published May 2026

Most of the nerves people have before a first remedial massage are about the unknowns, not the treatment itself: what you undress to, whether it will hurt, whether you have to make conversation the whole time. None of it is complicated once you know the order it happens in, which is the same order for every first-time client at Plumb Line.

Book 60 minutes for your first visit unless the complaint is small and specific, in which case 30 is enough. That length includes the free posture assessment described below, so you are not paying twice for the intake.

The five parts of a first visit

In order

From the waiting room to the recheck.

  1. 01

    The intake conversation

Ten to fifteen minutes on what is sore, since when, what makes it better or worse and what you actually do with your body all day.

  2. 02

    The standing posture check

Against the plumb line, so you can see for yourself where your shoulders sit against where they would sit with nothing pulling on them.

  3. 03

    Undressing and draping

In the treatment room, alone, in your own time. Undress to whatever you are comfortable in, then lie under the sheet and towel on the table.

  4. 04

    The treatment itself

Pressure agreed at the start and rechecked partway through. Only the area being worked is ever uncovered.

  5. 05

    The recheck and the plan

A final posture check, a note on your file, and an honest answer if you ask how often you should come back.

Pressure, talking and the awkward bits

On pressure

We ask what you want at the start and check again partway through, because what feels right in the first five minutes on a cold muscle is not always what feels right twenty minutes in. Firm is not automatically better than moderate, and saying so is not going to offend anyone in the room. If something tips from pressure into pain, say so immediately and we will back off.

On talking

Some clients want to talk through the whole session, some want to lie there in silence, and most want the first five minutes of conversation and then quiet. All three are normal, and we take the cue from you rather than filling the room by default.

On the awkward bits

You undress alone, in the room, with the door closed, in whatever time you need. The therapist knocks and waits for you to say you are ready under the sheet before coming back in. If anything about the set-up is uncomfortable, before or during, say so. Nothing about a remedial massage session requires you to push through a moment that does not feel right.
